antifeminism:

Alright, now you can remember I’m talking about Sarah Palin.

My dear feminists, you feel that hatred flowing through you? Feel that contempt? Feel that utter disgust at the mere thought of her?

Why is this? Why is there nothing but vitriol toward women who don’t necessarily carry a certain set of beliefs. Why has modern-day feminism been reduced to the advancement of women who agree with one another? Why has feminism turned into an ugly word when talking about equality? Why are the worst attacks toward powerful women always seem to come from feminists? Why and when did feminism stop being about the advancement of all women?

The fun thing about being a feminist? We believe in gender equality. Part of gender equality is judging people based on their accomplishments, their ideals, their actions, and in the case of politicians, their politics—not based on their gender. As far as I’m concerned, a person’s gender (whether male or female) should never be the sole reason for liking or disliking someone, and in the case of Sarah Palin, her gender had nothing to do with my dislike for her. My dislike for her springs entirely from the fact that I do not agree with her politics or her ideals, and in many cases, I found her actions to be questionable. While I commend her on her success and I think it is wonderful that she has found a balance in her family and in her work—from that standpoint I really do admire her, and have defended her on more than one occasion—I don’t think her gender or her success alone should be enough to make me support her or even to leave off my criticisms of her. I did no such favors for her male running mate. Why would I do that for her?

Being a woman isn’t enough to make a feminist like you, because we don’t believe that gender equality is about always privileging women. We do believe that women deserve their fair shot. So while we didn’t argue that Sarah Palin didn’t have the right to run for the office of Vice President, most of us argued that we didn’t want her—because of her political positions—in it.
